It’s Meet the Team Monday and this month the Spotlight is on Mike Hobbs – part of Gowerton Golf Range’s popular Director duo. If you play golf in Swansea, chances are you already know Mike!
When did you first get into golf?
I first picked up a club when I was about 12 years old while visiting my cousins in Somerset. They were into golf and took me to play at Enmore Park – that’s where I caught the bug, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
What do you love about Gowerton Golf Range?
I just love meeting such a diverse range of people – from all around and all walks of life, with wide ranging golfing abilities, but all sharing the same passion for golf. That shared enthusiasm is what makes the Range such a special place.
What’s your favourite golf course – apart from Gowerton Golf Range obvs?
Oh it’s got to be Wentworth. For me, the quality and the challenge are unsurpassed in the UK – it’s just on another level. But if we’re talking local, I’ve got a real soft spot for Fairwood Park, because that’s where I started out and honed my skills.
What would be your dream fourball?
Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Jack Nicklaus. If Tiger’s not available, my father-in-law can step in – that should keep me in my wife’s good books!
What is your best golfing moment (either watching or playing)?
My first hole-in-one. It was the 12th hole at Fairwood Park back in 1984 – a six iron, tight draw, one bounce, straight into the hole. A moment I’ll never forget!
What’s your favourite sport, besides golf?
Football of course. I played as a kid and I still love watching it on a Saturday afternoon – nothing more exciting!
When you’re not at the Range, where would we find you?
Either walking on a Gower beach with my wife, or enjoying a nice cold pint in the Joiners.
What’s your favourite tipple (whether alcoholic or not)?
A nice cold pint of Peroni.
Tell us a fun fact about you?
Some say I look like Gordon Ramsay, but I promise I’m calmer on the golf course than he is in the kitchen.
